I don't know about you... but I LOVE HGTV. If I get control of the remote in the evenings, I happily watch "Property Virgins", "House Hunters", "Hidden Potential", "Designed to Sell", "Curb Appeal" and on and on! So being the enthusiastic watcher, I whole-heartily believed that buying a house must be SO MUCH FUN. I mean, I watch dozens of couples each week go about their merrily way finding that "perfect house". Well, it's all hogwash!
First of all... who honestly looks at only THREE houses before choosing one? Can you imagine only dating three guys before choosing one to marry? IT'S A BIG DECISION! I myself lost count around 30 houses we've looked at to buy. Obviously I could not be on the show... because after they showed me the three, I'd burst out laughing when they told me I had to decide on one!
Secondly, of all the shows I watch.... they don't seem to have any realistic wrenches thrown in. No crappy first offers under the table, no interest rates rising last minute.... and from someone who just lost an offer on a house (I'm still a bit bitter)... it's hard for me to watch everything fall in place for those happy couples on TV!
Third... and I think this is what gets me the most.... what about the dramas of selling a house? Sure... they have "Designed to Sell" where they show you how a few extra thousand will make it "prettier" for the potential buyer. But what about how to sell? How to attract buyers? Tips on Open Houses? Or just the worry that if you sell to quickly, you're have to rush around to find a home?
Okay.... as you guys know I'm neck deep in this junk right now... and unfortunately I decided to take it out tonight on the BLOG. I guess I just need someone to find my light at the end of the tunnel and then point me in that direction!
As for HGTV, I still hold it dear in my heart... but from now on I won't be watching it with rose-colored glasses.
